Kakuli Bush Camp

Lodge style Discover the secret season

Lavish in lush green

Located on one of the original campsites in the central region of the South Luangwa National Park is the rustic tented Kakuli Bush Camp. Revel in its elevated position well above the flood lines on the banks of the Luangwa River, which lends itself to spectacular views, and Kakuli is one of the few bush camps open for Zambia’s green safari season. To experience the secret season, visit the area between the 20th of January and the 5th of April, the 20th until the 31st of May, and the 1st and 7th of November. At this time of the year, the river is high and you will gain access to the wildlife from the comfort of a boat. Activities are either on the river or on foot in the drier, sandy areas that surround camp. The camp calls this the River and Rainbows season: imagine the smell of fresh, wet leaves greeting you in the morning as you float gently on the stream of a flowing river. Later in the day, enjoy a rainbow as it arcs over the afternoon sunset. Let Aubrey Njobvu guide you: he has been a guide and manager of this area for many years. Nobody knows the area like he does. The resident pride of lion, the local leopards (make sure you meet Toby, Kakuli’s resident leopard), the wildlife habits and hidden wonders: Aubrey will take you to all the miracles this land has to offer.

Kakuli Bush Camp has four simple, yet beautiful, traditional walk-in safari tents. Each tent has en-suite facilities constructed of thatch and reed and other natural materials. A two-bedroom family unit is also available. In each tent, you will find a basin, separate flush WC and large shower with hot and cold running water. The front of the tent can be completely opened up, offering stunning views of the river from the comfort of your bed or the verandah. This is the perfect spot to kick your shoes off and daydream, or doze in the shade. Calming, sandy walkways link the tents to the central camp area, also constructed of reed and thatch and set on a raised deck. Complete with a bar and lounge area, this is the ideal environment to kickback and watch the grazing lagoon as wildlife meander past.

Activities at Kakuli Bush Camp

Guests of Kakuli Bush Camp can decide daily if they wish to venture out on foot for guided bush walks or by vehicle, with night drives also permitted. During the green season (January to early April) activities are either by boat on the river or on foot in the drier, sandier areas that surround camp. Most evenings however, you will want to explore the area after dark. This stretch of the Luangwa is bustling with predators and the best time to see them in action is during those first few hours after dusk. What does a day look like? Start your morning with breakfast over a crackling open fire, and get ready for your first game drive. When you venture out, you will notice your spotter has eyes like a hawk and can spot an animal from meters away, even in the dark. After this first activity, it is time for a lavish brunch buffet, followed by a long siesta to recharge for the next safari activity. Drive along the Luangwa river for some amazing wildlife views: lion prides, buffalo herds, elephants crossing, a family of giraffes stoically stewing on juicy leaves or a close-up look at a leopard feasting on a fresh kill – it is all possible at this incredibly game-rich area. This camp is not only a treat for the eyes: bellies will be happy, too. Dinnertime means enjoying great dishes from a professional kitchen. The camp even bundled popular recipes like ‘Curried chicken and mango salad’ and ‘Dreamy red velvet cake’ because guests wanted to take them home. Although no meal will never taste as good as it does on that cozy spot on the viewing deck, eaten while looking out on a herd of hippos taking a bath.

Tripadvisor comments Kakuli Bush Camp

This camp really blew us away with its exceptional hosting by the fabulous Claire who absolutely made us feel this was our home away from home, and also by exceptional guiding from Julius and Phil. We've travelled to various countries in Africa for the last 18 years and we both felt this camp was the cream of the crop. Incredible wildlife sightings, great bush walks, lovely food and company, what more could you ask for.

I stayed at Kakuli for two nights in combination with a 2 night stay at Mchenja and it was again a wonderful experience (my second visit to Kakuli this year). The game viewing and the quality of the guides is just simply amazing. We saw 11 leopards in 4 nights, fighting leopards and one on a fresh kill. There were also plenty of buffalo, lions and wonderful birds. Claire was a fantastic host and she made sure our stay was a great experience. Thank you so much and we will be back again soon.
