Kuyenda Bushcamp
Lodge style Simple luxury
Get back to nature
Nestled on a knoll beneath the comfortable shade of mature trees, Kuyenda Bush Camp’s remote location in the stunning South Luangwa National Park is truly magical. The rippling grasses of the neighbouring plain offer an opportunity to meet the local wildlife without even stepping foot off of your own deck, and the proximity to the dry Manzi River beds enhances the truly authentic bush camp atmosphere. Here at Kuyenda, you are truly in the wild. And you’re in good hands, as the extraordinary Phil Berry, one of Zambia’s most experienced naturalists, and his ever-hospitable partner Babette Alfieri, regularly run the camp. No one knows Kuyenda like they do, and no-one will make you feel more welcome.
Kuyenda’s intimate atmosphere is exemplified by the cluster of four traditional thatched grass rondavels (circular huts), which ideally sleep 6-8 guests between the three twin and one double accommodations. The rooms are simple and cozy, and you’ll fall in love with the charm of paraffin lamps, draped mosquito netting, panoramic windows, and open-air ensuite bathrooms with large safari drum showers. This camp embodies the authentic aura of old Africa in everything they do, down to the warm wood furnishings, the natural, muted color schemes, and the clean, uncluttered decor of the rondavels. And this deep in the bush, you never know what curious animal’s eyes may be peering through the branches as you brush your teeth in the dawn’s soft light.
It may be the simplest of the camps offered by The Bushcamp company, but it’s got everything you could need for a true safari. Forget about infinity pools, wi-fi, and crystal glasses. Here, luxury takes a different meaning, as the drama of the African wilderness plays out each day on the sweeping plains outside your door. Settle in a comfortable chair in the lounge, enjoy a cocktail, and let the sights and sounds of the bush melt away your cares. Enjoy delicious meals in the beautifully decorated open-air dining area, and trade safari adventure stories with your fellow travelers. You’ll be amazed at what delicacies the Kuyenda chefs can prepare with no electricity!
Activities at Kuyenda Bushcamp
The prime activity at Kuyenda Bushcamp is a walking safari. Whether you are looking at a leopard or a termite, with some of the South Luangwa's most diverse creatures, and the breathtaking landscape surrounding Kuyenda, you can be guaranteed that no two outings will ever be the same. So pack your favorite walking shoes and stretch those legs: you’re going to love these expertly guided, incredibly beautiful walks in the wide open bush and along the dense tree lines. There’s nothing more exciting than coming upon a herd of elephants lumbering through the river bed, or startling a flock of migratory birds and watching their wild flight patterns swoop and then settle again. If you want to get even further afield, night game drives are also on offer, and will provide an interesting view of the area’s nocturnal creatures as you sip sundowners in the bush. However you decide to spend your time, the memories will last a lifetime.
Tripadvisor comments Kuyenda Bushcamp
I have never commented on trip advisor before, but felt compelled in this instance. I'm a zoology researcher and spend my life travelling the world studying wildlife. This bushcamp is, quite simply, my favourite place in the world. Luxurious without being detached, this is the place you go if you want to immerse yourself in South Luangwa's wildlife. As someone who is extremely picky about going on guided wildlife tours, the guide we had (Suzyo) is amongst the most knowledgeable, and yet incredibly humble, natural historians I have met (and trust me, I have met the best). I came here with my wife for our honeymoon, and we cannot think of anything that could have made our stay more spectacular, absorbing, and relaxing than it was.

This was our first experience of a bush camp in Zambia and what a place to start. While the accommodation and food were wonderful it was the staff that were outstanding. A drive or a walk with the very knowledgeable guides was to begin to understand this incredibly diverse and exciting country. The staff in the camp were dedicated to making your holiday memorable. They were constantly cheerful and helpful. A special thanks to our hosts Babette and Phil who set the standard for warm hospitality. Kuyenda with its outdoor showers and solar lighting provides an authentic African experience with all the comforts of a four star hotel. Thank you for a wonderful introduction to Africa.
