Luangwa River Camp
Lodge style Holistic Africa experience
River bank rituals
Welcome to some of the last remaining unspoilt wilderness areas and the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa. The South Luangwa National Park marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, and it is through this that the great meandering Luangwa river runs, with its ox bow lagoons, riverine supported woodlands and large plains, all of which play host to huge concentrations of game including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo and over 450 species of birds. Luangwa River Camp sits nestled under an ancient ebony grove on the banks of the Luangwa River overlooking the majestic area known as the Luangwa Wafwa. Not just the location of the camp is mind blowing: there is also a long list of activities to pick from once you are settled. Beyond the ‘usual suspects’ of game drives and safari walks, there is also the option to schedule a cultural village tour, take a stroll in the bustling area of Mfuwe – where you will find lots of craft shops, bars and markets – or hop on a boat for a seasonal boat trip. Traveling with curious kids? The Wildlife Education Center teaches them everything about the surroundings and its inhabitants. These unique activities will enrich your experience of Africa and make your trip unforgettable.
The subtly decorated bush suites with brick walls and thatch roofs each have ensuite bathrooms with sunken bathtubs looking out onto your own private corner of Africa. Both the bedroom and bathroom are fronted with large sliding doors that open onto a decked area, allowing a lovely breeze into the room and great views of the river. The main area stretches over various elevated decked levels that are situated between a tempting double plunge pool with a charming waterfall. Seating areas around the pool or in the shade of the open plan bar on the highest level all offer uninterrupted views across the river and into the National Park. Luangwa River Camp offers all the creature comforts of a lodge yet retains the intimacy and privacy of a bush camp.
Activities at Luangwa River Camp
From Luangwa River Camp you can explore the rich diversity of the surrounding area on guided morning and afternoon walks, or via game drives during the day or evening hours. Be sure to opt in for the safari walks: they’re much more intimate in their exploration of the environment. You will surely learn and see things you wouldn’t experience during a drive. (Plus: all walks come with a tea and cookie stop, a special experience in the middle of the bush!) All of the wonderful guides at this bushcamp are committed to the area and the original inhabitants (read: the animals). You will be surprised how many of the animals in the area they are familiar with and who they follow daily, always careful not to interfere with the natural habitats. During a game drive or walk, they will go that extra mile to find that special animal on your bucket list. Together with their knowledge and amazing bush stories, every game activity is one you won’t forget. The afternoon drives along the river are an especially magical experience. The river itself can also be used for a cool wade through the shallow waters with a scenic riverside sundowner. Bare feet in the water, cold cocktail in your hand, watching masses of carmine bee eaters – Africa doesn’t get much better than this.

Our family visited for our first safari experience and were blown away! The game was just amazing and our guide Yona was brilliant. We had close viewings of Leopards, Lions and Elephants that we will never forget! The staff in camp, Yvonne and Daudi were so friendly and the food was just wonderful. The breakfast brunch was an experience of a lifetime. All in all a wonderful time was had by all. We would highly recommend visiting.

My husband and I stayed at luangwa river camp in July 2016 and the experience was so good we went again in August . From the service to the food to the guides, I cannot fault anything. Our guide Yona was incredible and we saw numerous kills. The rooms are so comfortable and clean with great views. The best lodge to stay in is number 2 - this has the better view out of them all. Great experience overall. Highly recommend it.
