Nkwali Camp

Lodge style Understated elegance

An intimate experience

Located on private land adjacent to and overlooking the South Luangwa National Park is one of the area’s premiere destinations, Nkwali Safari Camp. The camp’s captivating facilities are set against a wide bend in the Luangwa River and conveniently shaded by abundant ebony trees. With easy access to the game-rich Mfuwe Sector of the park via bridge or pontoon, this camp will leave you breathless with sightings of elephants and leopards, baboons and banded mongoose, just to name a few. You will discover excellent views of the lagoon and the river every area of this beautifully designed camp, from the stone patio outside your room to the thatched roof dining area. And as Nkwali is a relatively intimate camp, the staff here is incredibly attentive; you are sure to be dazzled by their unparalleled attention to detail and personalized service.

Nkwali has six cool and spacious A-frame chalets (including a honeymoon suite/family suite) constructed of woven bamboo and thatch and decorated with handsome textiles. These charming chalets will win your heart with their rustic luxury and relaxing atmosphere. Rooms open up to magnificent views of the river during the day, where you’ll likely catch the local hippos and giraffes having a drink. In the evenings, the grill doors are pulled closed for your privacy, but the charming sounds of this natural wonderland will sing you to sleep. Don’t be surprised if you wake in the night to the sound of nibbles, as elephants sometimes enjoy a snack on the premises. The roomy en-suite bathrooms offer flush WC, double basin and an enchanting open air shower that begs you to drink in the enormous African skies. Nkwali is dominated by an enormous ebony tree around which the bar is moulded. From the bar deck, which is cleverly cantilevered over the river, you can watch the sunset over the Luangwa with your favorite cocktail in your hand, and reminisce about your day. Set back from the river on a charming lagoon are the dining room and swimming pool, a favourite for elephants and guests alike.

Activities at Nkwali Camp

When you’re guaranteed a window seat, and guided by experienced and dedicated staff, why wouldn’t you spend the afternoon on a game drive? And after the flush and excitement of that high quality game drive, there’s nothing better than cooling off in their refreshing pool. Float about and compare notes with other guests about the leopards, lions, and baboons you saw that day. If you want a closer view of the area’s natural world, a walking safari will thrill you, as the guides here are incredibly devoted to their work and love sharing this incredible environment with you. If you want something a little different, consider coming between December and April and take advantage of the boating tours offered to give you a better view of the lagoons and their impressive bird population. It’s a peaceful and fascinating way to spend a morning, and that afternoon you’ll be energized for a fun trip to the local village for a tour and a stop at Tribal Textiles to grab those souvenirs your family told you to bring home.

Tripadvisor comments Nkwali Camp

We stayed here for 3 nights in September and had an amazing time. The accomodation was lovely and really secluded. The food and hospitality was second to none but it was the staff that really made this a truly memorable experience. We had Chris as our guide for the 3 days who was really knowledgable and really wanted us to experience the animals we wanted to see. We were very lucky in that we saw 4 different leopards in one day! The manager Kiki was amazing and we all had a fantastic time that could not be faulted in any way.

Recently stayed here for the third time. It's a wonderful place in every way. Stunning location, great staff, delicious food and fantastic service. Because it's a small lodge you feel part of the family and really nothing is too much trouble for the staff.
